University Introduction

Guangxi University of Science and Technology (GXUST) is located in Liuzhou, a national-level historical and cultural city, an important industrial town, transportation junction and business and logistics center in southwest China. Approved by the Ministry of Education in 2013, the university was established by the combination of Guangxi University of Technology and Liuzhou Medical College, and is one of the general institutes of higher education under the direct administration of the People’s Government of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.

GXUST upholds the schooling philosophy as “Developing-oriented, Valuing Teachers and Students, and Training Talents as Industry Backbone and Innovative Keys”, and continues to deepen school featuring “School-City Integration and School- Enterprise Cooperation” with the mottoes of “Truth, Integrity, Morality and Innovation”. The university fully carries out the fundamental task of fostering virtue through education, always sticks to the original aspiration and mission of cultivating the talents for the Party and the State, serves the economic and social development for the region, and makes more efforts to cultivate application-oriented professionals at a higher level with a strong sense of social responsibility, innovative spirit, integration of theory with practice and international perspective.

Well equipped with basic facilities and superior educational conditions, the university comprises 3 campuses (Donghuan Campus, Liushi Campus and Liudong Campus) and 2 teaching centers (Baisha and Jianpan), covering an area of nearly 4,000 mu (about 267 hectares), with a total school building area of more than 860,000 square meters, and an average teaching and research equipment value of 16,600 yuan for each student. And now there are 16 secondary schools, 1 academic department, 19 research institutes (centers), 2 affiliated hospitals and over 30,000 full-time students. The university continues to promote the construction of smart campuses and has built a data center with a capacity of 400 physical servers, which has been included in the Urban Key Units of China Education and Research Network. GXUST has established the Tus Incubator Base for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, and been awarded as the Liuzhou Branch of “Creativity, Innovation, Invention and Entrepreneurship Center” for College Students of Guangxi, and Mass Innovation Space of Guangxi.

GXUST has a relatively complete range of disciplines and distinctive features of disciplines and majors. The university focuses on engineering, and majors cover 9 disciplines including engineering, management, science, medicine, economics, literature, law, art, and education. In 2013, approved by the Academic Degree Committee of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, the university has been authorized to set up and build doctoral programs with rights to confer Doctoral Degree. Up to now, the university has 3 disciplines authorized to develop doctoral programs, 2 provincial level first-class disciplines (cultivation), 9 provincial level key disciplines of Guangxi colleges and universities, 9 first-level disciplines qualified of awarding Master Degree, and 9 categories with the authorization for conferring Professional Master Degree, covering more than 40 professional directions, 69 undergraduate majors and 10 junior college majors. One major has passed the international effective equivalence certification and one has passed the professional evaluation certification of the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development and 10 has been included in the first batch of undergraduate enrollment; GXUST also has 3 national characteristic professional construction sites, 1 ministerial “Professional Comprehensive Reform Pilot” major, 3 national first-class undergraduate major construction sites, 13 autonomous region-level first-rate undergraduate major construction sites, 3 major construction programs for vocational education teachers of the Ministry of Education, 10 high quality majors at provincial level in Guangxi, 9 integration construction programs of characteristic majors and curriculum in Guangxi higher education institutions, 6 advantageous characteristic majors at the autonomous region level, and 7 construction projects of teaching bases (centers) of characteristic majors and experimental training in Guangxi undergraduate institutions; 6 autonomous region-level experimental teaching demonstration centers and 2 autonomous region-level virtual simulation experimental teaching centers; 3 national first-class undergraduate courses; 25 autonomous region-level first-class undergraduate courses and 21 autonomous region-level excellent courses. The university has jointly established the first-rate disciplines and majors with Liuzhou City, and will receive a total of 100 million yuan from the city in funding for university development within 5 years.

The talent training system of the university is sound, and the training quality has been constantly improved.The professional talent training program reflects the concept of student-centered, results-oriented and continuous improvement, reasonably sets the total credits of the first class, reconstructs the professional course system and teaching content, and promotes the depth, difficulty and challenge of the course. In December 2015, the university successfully passed the review and evaluation of undergraduate teaching work of the Ministry of Education. In the past five years, teachers of GXUST have won 31 autonomous region-level teaching achievement awards, including 9 first prizes; students participated in “Internet +” “Challenge Cup”, mathematical modeling, electronic design and other discipline competitions and won more than 400 national awards. Participating in the 2018 China Formula Student Car Race and the 2020 China University Student Formula Electric Race, GXUST won the runner-up respectively and won 51 gold medals in the National College Student Rock Climbing Championship. Participating in the 11th Guangxi Student Games, the university won the first place in the general undergraduate group team score. And the men’s basketball team won the championship of the general undergraduate group in the 12th Guangxi Student Games. The employment rate of graduates has been maintained at a high level, and the university has been conferred the title of “Outstanding Unit of Employment and Entrepreneurship Work for College Graduates in Guangxi” for successive years. It has implemented the quality improvement project of ideological and political work, “Young Marxists Training Programs” and the Party’s basic knowledge education programs for college students, and achieved remarkable results. The main channel role of classroom education has been fully brought into play, and the education and teaching reform of “Curriculum with Ideology and Politics” has been steadily advanced. The university continues to promote the “Full Participation in Education, Whole Process of Education andAll-round Education” and actively constructs the practical education system of “Three Collaborations and Ten Platforms”. It has been named to the “Outstanding Organization Unit” for 18 times in the social practice activity of “Going to the Countryside to Spread Literacy and Scientific Knowledge and Offer Medical Services to Farmers” for college and technical secondary school students in summer vacation. The project of “Social Work for Young Students” was recognized as the excellent project of the second batch of ideological and political work in national colleges and universities.

GXUST has a reasonable structure and excellent teachers. There are more than 1,900 faculty members, and nearly 50% of the full-time teachers have senior professional titles. There are 21 teachers who are experts enjoying the special government allowance from the State Council, Bagui scholars, Guangxi special experts, Guangxi outstanding experts, or the second level of the Guangxi One Hundred Thousand Talents Project candidates, or outstanding scholars of Guangxi universities, or the “Hundred Talents Program” for the introduction of high-level overseas talents in Guangxi universities. Since the implementation of the “3331 High-Level Talent Program” in 2017, more than 260 doctoral degree teachers have joined the university. Meanwhile, GXUST vigorously support teachers to study for doctoral degrees, select key teachers to study abroad, and go to enterprises and institutions for temporary training. Since 2016, teachers have undertaken more than 1,400 scientific research projects of various kinds, through which teachers have gotten 32 provincial and ministerial level scientific research achievement awards, and obtained more than 1,200 national patent authorizations.

The university has constantly achieved new results in making efforts to promote the scientific and technological innovation and served the society. Since 2016, the university has obtained more than 100 National Fund Projects, 2 National Arts Fund Projects, 1 second prize of National Technological Invention, 9 Guangxi Science and Technology Awards, and 18 Outstanding Achievement Awards of Guangxi Social Science, including a first prize of Guangxi Scientific and Technological Progress, and atop prize of Guangxi Technological Invention.There are also 1,203 authorized patents, 507 of which were for invention, ranking the top among universities in Guangxi. The Engineering Research Center of the Ministry of Education has passed the acceptance inspection. The technology transfer center of the university was honored as the technology transfer demonstration institution at autonomous region-level. GXUST at present has 9 provincial and ministerial-level scientific research platforms, 11 key laboratories of Guangxi universities, 18 major laboratories of Liuzhou, and 3 new-type think tanks with Guangxi characteristics. Based on the needs of regional industry development and combined with local key industries, the university has carried out extensive cooperation with Liugong, Dongfeng Liuzhou Automobile Co., Ltd., SAIC-GM-Wuling Automobile and other enterprises and institutions in the fields of engineering machinery, automobile industry, biochemical engineering, healthy aquaculture, food, etc. The university adopts the school-runmodel for provincial team to jointly build the Guangxi rock climbing team with the Sports Bureau of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. Its vocational education base undertakes the training of vocational teachers and the recognition of “double-professionally-titled” teachers in Guangxi vocational colleges, and provides various social trainings at all levels for locals by relying on resources such as the cadre education and training base.

The university upholds to open cooperation in running schools and constantly expands the space for development. Taking the initiative to serve the strategy of “Digital China” and cooperating with well-known domestic enterprises to promote the integration of industry and education and the reform of diversified school-running mode, GXUST established the first digital school in the higher education industry of China, namely, TusDigital School of Guangxi University of Science and Technology with the collaboration of Tus-Holdings Co., Ltd. in 2016. It also founded the “HTC VIVE School of Science and Technology of Guangxi University of Science and Technology” with Guizhou VIVEDU Technology Co., Ltd. in 2017 for connecting to the “Digital Guangxi” strategy and enriching and expanding the school-enterprise cooperation mode. The university has arranged majors related to the strategic emerging industries, and newly established 6 national special majors in new engineeringfield such as robot engineering, and 2 national controlled majors in medicine including clinical medicine. Special scholarship has been set up for students studying overseas, and outstanding students have been selected and sent abroad to learn and exchange. At present, the university has cooperated with Southern Cross University of Australia and Edinburgh Napier University of UK in 2 undergraduate programs, with more than 800 students. The number of students enrolled in the “4+0” Sino-foreign cooperation program ranks the top among the similar colleges and universities in Guangxi, and the number of foreign students of the university continues to increase. The universityhas been rated as “The Fastest Progress Unit of Overseas Study Education in Guangxi Universities”. It has carried out exchange and collaboration in various forms at different levels with 50 universities of 18 countries, including the United States, Germany, France, Ireland, South Korea and Vietnam, and its international influence is growing.

The university has attached importance to promote cultural and ideological progress, and the campus civilization and harmony. It vigorously carries forward the socialist core values, and cultivates fine school spirit, teaching and study style and medical ethics. It has been awarded the titles of “Home of the National Model Workers”, “National Advanced Unit of Campus Culture”, “National Demonstration Base of Nationwide Reading” and “National 54 Red Flag Youth Corps Committee”, and recognized as “Civilized Campus in Guangxi”, “Safe and Civilized Campus of Guangxi”, “Liuzhou Garden-style Unit” and “Security and Safe-guarding Advanced Unit of Liuzhou”.

In January 2020, the second congress of the Guangxi University of Science and Technology of the Communist Party of China was successfully held. In the future, the university will unite more closely around the Party Central Committee with Comrade Xi Jinping as the core, holding high the great banner of Xi Jinping’s new era of socialism with Chinese characteristics, and thoroughly studying and implementing the spirit of the 19th CPC National Congress and the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th Plenary Session of the 19th CPC Central Committee, implementing the spirit of the National and Regional Education Conference, the Party Building Work Conference of Colleges and Universities, the College Ideological and Political Work Meeting, and the Symposium for Teachers of Ideological and Political Theory Course in the University. By upholding and strengthening the overall leadership of the party,firmly grasping the socialist direction of running school, performing the fundamental task of fostering virtue through education, focusing on reinforcing the connotation construction to improve school-running level, deepening the integration of industry and education and promoting collaborative education, highlighting the four development strategies of “Establishing School by High Quality, Revitalizing School through Talents Development, Prospering School with Culture, and Running School in Opening-up”, and energetically conducting eight key projects, the university will strive to write a new chapter in the development of a high-level application-oriented university with distinctive advanced features in China and make new and greater contributions to the construction of a magnificent Guangxi and the realization of the dream of national rejuvenation.
