Weifang Medical University (WFMU) is a state-owned medical university which was founded in 1951. It was expanded in 1958 as Changwei Medical College and renamed as Weifang Medical University in 1987. In 1986, WFMU became one of the third batches of universities to confer master’s degree. In 2012, WFMU was listed as one of the institutions of the Ph.D Talent Cultivation Project to serve special national needs, and was authorized to award doctoral degree. WFMU has educated Ph. D candidates since 2013. WFMU was approved Shandong Province elite training characteristics project of applied talents in 2013. In 2014, WFMU achieved the first batch of National undergraduate admission. In 2016, Clinical Medicine, Anesthesiology, Public Affairs Management are listed as first batch of National undergraduate admission. It is also the applied talents education unit of Shandong province.
WFMU is comprised of 16 schools or departments and offers 24 bachelor’s degree programs, which covers 7 subject categories including Medicine, Science, Management, Law, Education, Engineering, and Arts. It has formed a special major characteristic which takes medicine as its main body, medicine and medical related disciplines develop and promote coordinately. It has 6 first-level Master’s Degree programs, which includes Basic Medicine, Clinical Medicine, Public Health and Preventive Medicine, Pharmacy, and Biology, and 52 second-level Master’s Degree programs. WFMU also has 9 Provincial Brand Special Programs. The university now has 2 academicians of Chinese Academy of Engineering, 5“Taishan Scholar” special invited overseas experts, 8 doctoral degree candidates’ supervisors, 596 master students’ supervisors, and 5 provincial teaching teams. The university has 8 key disciplines (laboratories) of Shandong Province.Human Anatomy and Histoembryology is entitled to offer post for “Taishan Scholar”. Surgery, Human Anatomy and Histoembryology, Medical Imaging and Nuclear Medicine, Social Medicine and Health Service Management and Applied Pharmacology Laboratory, Immunology Laboratory, Clinical Examination Diagnostics Laboratory, Plastic Surgery and Microscopic Repair Technology Laboratory are key disciplines (laboratories) of the “12th Five-Year Plan” of Shandong Province. Program of Plastic Surgery and Ophthalmology are subjects led by Shandong Provincial discipline leaders. One of the teaching team is awarded as Provincial Excellent University Scientific Research Innovation (Education) Team. Candidates who hold equivalent educational level are eligible to apply for part-time master’s degree programs. The university is also entitled to award Master’s Degree of Clinical Medicine to Candidates who hold equivalent educational level. It is also the main test center for self-studying Nursing students of Shandong higher education and test center for HSK (Chinese Proficiency Test) of China. Branch Center of National engineering research center for organization engineering, Medical Technology Education Center of Shandong Province, and grassroots health management cadres training center of Shandong Province are all located in Weifang Medical University.
The university covers an area of more than 1.2 million square meters with a construction area of more than 630,000 square meters. The total value of teaching and research facilities reaches 200 million RMB. Its library holds a collection of more than 2.2 million volumes. It has 17 affiliated hospitals and more than 146 different practical teaching bases.
At present, there are about 1300 postgraduates, 16000 full-time undergraduates of 3 or 5 year- programs, and more than 500 international students study on campus. In the years of educational practice, the school has formed a studying style of "aim high, study hard, unite knowledge and practice, and be innovative”. Its talent training quality is highly recognized by the society. In both the second and third National Medical University Students’ Clinical Skills Competitions, candidates from our university had continuously won the second prize in the final national competition and first prize in east China. The passing-rate for CET-4(College English Test) was ranked No. 1 among all universities and colleges of China for two years. For the past 3 years, students had won 1 national special award and 11 national first prizes in the National College Students English Contest. Among the two bathes students who took the National Clinical Knowledge Examinations for all Chinese medical universities, 4 students ranked among the Top 10. As a representative of the medical colleges and universities of Shandong Province, the university participated 6 times in the "challenge cup" national college students' extracurricular academic science and technology works competition, and won 2 national third-prizes, 40 provincial special awards, and 14 national invention patents. School has 6 times as a representative of the Shandong higher medical colleges and universities to participate in the "challenge cup" national college students' extracurricular academic science and technology works competition, won the national third prize 2 prizes, grand prize at the provincial level and other 40 items, 14 won the national invention patents. The university was awarded the title of National College Students' Social Practice Advanced Unit for 5 times, won Excellent Organization Award for national college students' campus culture, and was awarded the honorary titles such as National Advanced Unit of inviting foreign experts. In 2008, it was rated as one of the outstanding units in the Evaluation and Assessment for undergraduate education for Ministry of Education of China.

More than 50,000 graduates have successfully obtained their bachelor’s and master’s degrees, which has won the university a very good reputation.
